It has been another fantastically busy term and I look back at some of the highlights from the last eleven weeks.
Successful trips have taken place this term for four year groups, with Year 5 visiting Osmington Bay, the Year 6 boys travelling to Normandy and the Year 7 boys carrying out their Geography field trip in South Wales. After Common Entrance, the Year 8 boys had the pleasure of spending a week in the Lake District. I thank all staff who helped with these expeditions and the organisers in particular – Miss Mann, Mme Léna, Ms Seymour and Mr Waring.
U.K. Junior Mathematical Challenge
The boys in Years 7 and 8 took part in this national mathematical competition earlier in the term. Although it was a shame that our scholarship candidates were unable to sit the papers because they were busy taking examinations, a healthy number (17) achieved marks, which qualified for gold, silver and bronze certificates. 5 boys reached the gold standard, with 3 qualifying for silver and 9 for bronze awards. Special congratulations go to William Richards who scored the highest mark of all theEHTM candidates.
We had almost perfect weather for our annual Sports Day at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park. There was plenty of honest endeavour from all our competitors and some school records tumbled. I offer particular congratulations to Jasper Johnston, the Senior Victor Ludorum, and Toby Makin, our Junior Victor Ludorum, and thank Mr Russell and my colleagues for organising the day so efficiently. Our new school record holders are Jasper Johnston in the senior 800 metres (2mins.31secs), Max Eastwood in the Year 6 100 metres (13.69 secs), Henry Shippey from Year 4 in the junior 800 metres (2mins 43secs) and Patrick McCourt in the junior shot putt (8.25 metres). The boys were also able to enjoy competing in inter-school fixtures in cricket, tennis and athletics during the summer term and, again, we saw many fine performances.
An excellent Poetry Competition was organised by Ms Lively this term and all the finalists rose to the occasion superbly. I congratulate the following boys on winning their different sections, either by
reciting famous poems or their own work: Edward Middleton (Year 4), Bertie Gosling (Year 5), Louis Foster (Year 6), Alimorad Marandi (Year 7) and Sebastian Ellis (Year 8).
A fantastic summer concert took place on 1st July, with scores of performers of all ages providing the entertainment. There were wonderful individual performances and there was a superb rendition of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” from Vocal Ensemble. The evening concluded with eighty boys on stage singing a Broadway Blockbusters medley. Thanks, as ever, go to Mrs Freer, Mr Freer and all the music staff for their splendid work this year.
Summer Photography Competition
I hope you have all received a letter from Miss Allen about our summer photography competition and that the boys will snap away during their holidays, capturing “All Creatures Great and Small”. I look forward to seeing their photographs in September.
Year 8 Leavers
At the Year Eight Leavers’ Party on Monday evening I paid tribute to the excellent contributions the boys have made in every area of school life. The boys provided some wonderful entertainment for staff and parents during the evening and we hope that they will all be very happy and successful in their new schools.
We said goodbye to Miss Katharine Hunter Johnston at Final Assembly and we wish her well in her new post at Alleyn’s Junior School. We also wish Miss Naomi Mann the very best of luck later this month when she marries her fiancé, James. She will return in September as Mrs Pearson.
